GENERAL INFORMATION
Hobbyist plates are nonexpiring for as long as you own the hobbyist vehicle. Vehicles with Hobbyist plates cannot be operated during the month of January unless a special temporary plate is purchased. Temporary plates are available for $5 for five consecutive days or $30 for the month of January. To qualify for Hobbyist plates, you must have at least one other motor vehicle, which is used for regular transportation, and is currently registered in Wisconsin, under the same name(s) as the Hobbyist vehicle. Section C MUST be completed. For second or subsequent plates, allow approximately 4-6 weeks for the manufacturing process after the new Certificate of Registration has been issued. Truck-type vehicles with Hobbyist plates cannot haul more than 500 pounds. To determine the approximate weight, use the weight of the vehicle with a full tank of gas and the equipment normally on the vehicle. Do not include the weight of a camper, lid or cap that is mounted on the truck or the weight of any persons or pets. By state law, Hobbyist plates CANNOT be personalized. See MV2855 for Street Modified or Replica Vehicle Designation. To legally operate autos or trucks registered at 8,000 lbs. or less, you must display license plates within 2 business days of purchase. If you do not have current plates and you do have a valid Wisconsin title in your name, apply to a DMV Service Center or an agent authorized by DMV to obtain a temporary plate while your Hobbyist order is processed. An agent may charge a $3 plate fee and/or may charge a $5 service fee. NOTE: Until July 1, 2008, for residents of Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Waukesha and Washington counties, an emission test is REQUIRED within 45 days of the date that a Hobbyist plate is issued, if the vehicle is 1968 or newer.
