Ignition Interlock Device Information Sheet
An "ignition interlock device" is equipment designed to prevent a motor vehicle from being operated by a person who has consumed an alcoholic beverage. 1 Your criminal judgment requires you to use one of these devices. Beginning on the date you regain the privilege to drive, any motor vehicle you operate must be equipped with a properly functioning, monitored, and maintained ignition interlock device. You are subject to this requirement for the period stated in your criminal judgment. 2 Exception: You are not required to use an ignition interlock device when you operate a motor vehicle in certain communities that are listed on the Division of Motor Vehicles website at: www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/ADMIN/dmv/faq/manins.htm 3 You must pay all costs associated with the ignition interlock device, including the cost of installation, repair, and monitoring. If your judgment allows costs of the device to be credited against the fine in this case, you must submit adequate proof of payment to the clerk by the deadline stated by the court. The ignition interlock device must be certified by the Department of Corrections. 4 It must be installed only by an installer authorized by the manufacturer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. 5 The device also must be examined periodically after installation by an authorized installer for correct calibration and evidence of tampering or removal as required by the authorized installer but no less than every 90 days. 6 See the list of authorized installers on the back of this sheet.

Applying for Limited License to Drive Employer's Vehicles If you are required as a condition of employment to drive a motor vehicle owned or leased by your employer, you may ask the court for limited privileges to drive that vehicle without an ignition interlock device under AS 12.55.102(b). You must show the court in writing that 1) driving is required as a condition of employment in a vehicle owned or leased by your employer, 2) such driving will not create a substantial danger, and 3) no commercial motor vehicles, as defined in AS 28.40.100, requiring a commercial driver license will be operated.
