GOVERNOR NAMES NEW CO-CHAIRS FOR TECH COUNCIL Fong, Vallee original members of Governor's Council on Innovation, Technology
PHOENIX ­ Governor Janet Napolitano elevated two original members of her Governor's Council on Innovation and Technology to serve as co-chairs for the coming year. The Governor created the council by executive order in January 2003 and charged it with developing new economic strategies, including capital formation and technology transfer between universities and corporations, to build Arizona's knowledge-based economy. Roy Vallee, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Avnet, Inc. and Mike Fong, CEO and co-founder of Calence, Inc. are both highly acclaimed members of the corporate world and their communities. "I was very pleased when Roy and Mike agreed to serve on my new GCIT almost three years ago, and now I'm proud to name them as leaders of this council," Governor Napolitano said. "Thanks in large part to recommendations from GCIT, there has never been a better time to be in business in Arizona, and many innovative companies are now making their homes our state." Roy Vallee began his career in electronics distribution in 1971, when he joined Radio Products in Los Angeles, Calif. He worked his way up from stocking shelves to the shipping dock and eventually to sales. In 1977 he joined Hamilton/Avnet as a field sales representative, and many promotions would follow. By July 1998, Vallee had been named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Avnet, Inc. He now lives in Paradise Valley and serves on several advisory councils and boards involving corporate innovation. Vallee is also engaged in community activities, and in 1999 he was honored by Make A Difference, a Phoenix-based community and corporate volunteer organization. As the co-founder of Calence, Inc. in 1993, Mike Fong has guided the company through growth, expansion and consistent profitability. Prior to creating Calence, Fong provided technological consulting to companies around the world, and even lived overseas while he helped develop the Asia-Pacific network technology practices for an international systems integrator. He too has been honored, both for corporate achievements and community contributions. Fong was a two-time finalist for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year and was responsible for Calence's charitable events that raised nearly $50,000 for the American Lung Association and other charities.
