Instructions and Application for Temporary Operation Of Collector or Hobbyist Vehicles During January
1. A vehicle with collector or hobbyist registration plates may not be operated on the highway during the month of January unless the owner obtains a special permit. The temporary operation permit is issued by the department upon receipt of an application and fee. The fee is $5.00 for any five (5) consecutive days. Complete the Requested Operation Dates in the form above. If you need to operate your vehicle more than five consecutive days, submit additional fees. If you would like to operate your vehicle the entire month of January, the fee is $30.00. Count the beginning day when calculating the 5-day period. For example: Beginning January 10th for a total of 5 days, means that the time period requested would be January 10th through January 14th. If you need your vehicle January 10th through the 16th, for example, you would need to submit $10.00. Mail application to: Special Plate Unit, Wisconsin Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 7911, Madison, WI 53707-7911 or apply in person at any Motor Vehicle Customer Service Center with vehicle registration capabilities. A counter service fee of $5.00 will be charged in addition to the permit fee of $5.00 on all temporary plates issued at Motor Vehicle Customer Service Centers. The counter service fee will be charged only once per vehicle per visit. The temporary license plate must be displayed in the rear license plate bracket on the vehicle. Leave your collector or hobbyist plate in the front bracket. Carry the Certificate of Registration in the vehicle any time the vehicle is operated during the period of the permit. Operating a collector or hobbyist vehicle during the month of January without a valid permit may result in a forfeiture of not more than $200.00. The owner may choose to re-register the vehicle under the regular registration provisions. If you have any questions or would like additional information pertaining to collector or hobbyist license plates or converting to regular registration, please write to the Special Plates Unit at the address above, or telephone 608-266-3041; or e-mail: [email protected] The law requires that each collector must own and have currently registered one or more vehicles used for regular transportation.
