MAY LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES ANNOUNCED
MADISON Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today released May 2009 local unemployment rate estimates for Wisconsin cities, counties, and metropolitan areas. "We are encouraged to see rates improve in many counties and a number of metro areas," Secretary Gassman said. "Even so, the global recession challenges many communities. Under Governor Doyle's leadership, we are using all the resources at our disposal to provide employment and training services to workers, connect them with employers, and get the economy moving forward." METRO AREAS Unemployment rates decreased in four of the state's 12 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) in May compared to April, increased in four, and saw no change in four. When compared to rates of May 2008, all 12 MSAs had higher unemployment rates last month. The Madison MSA had the lowest rate in April at 6.2 percent. The Janesville MSA recorded the highest rate at 12.9 percent. Preliminary figures for non-farm wage and salary jobs showed an increase in each of the 11 reporting areas. All 11 reporting areas had fewer jobs compared to employment totals for May 2008. COUNTIES In May, unemployment rates decreased in 49 of 72 Wisconsin counties, increased in 16, and remained the same in seven. Dane County recorded the lowest rate at 5.9 percent, followed by Pepin at 6.5 percent. La Crosse, Buffalo, and Eau Claire counties all recorded rates of 6.6 percent. The highest rates were recorded in Rusk County at 13.4 percent, Rock County at 12.9 percent, and Iron County at 12.8 percent. On an annual basis, unemployment rates increased in all 72 counties. The smallest increase occurred in Bayfield, which recorded a 2.4 percentage point increase. The biggest increase occurred in Oconto County, where the unemployment rate increased 7.1 percentage points to 11.9 percent. - 30 -
