OPERATION CONDITIONS RECREATIONAL 3-VEHICLE COMBINATION PERMIT

For additional information, see www.dot.wisconsin.gov/business/carriers/osowgeneral.htm Vehicles operating under a 3-vehicle combination permit must comply with the following conditions: Permit Validity 1. The total allowed overall length of the 3-vehicle combination is 65 feet if the 2nd vehicle in the 3-vehicle combination is equipped with brakes adequate to control the moving and stopping of the second vehicle in the combination. Otherwise, the total overall length of the 3-vehicle combination of vehicles cannot exceed 60 feet. 2. The permit is valid for only the motor vehicle for which it is issued and the towed vehicles as described below. 3. The permit must be carried in the motor vehicle. 4. The towed vehicles may only be for the use of the operator of the towing vehicle. 5. The permit is valid for the period shown on the permit. The permit may be transferred to another vehicle owned or leased by the permittee upon written request to the Permit Unit. There is no charge for the transfer. 6. The permit is valid on all highways, every day of the year, at all hours. 7. Operation under this permit is not allowed during bad weather or hazardous road conditions. 8. Automobile liability insurance in the amount of 50/100/20 (or more) is required. Vehicles 9. The total number of vehicles may not exceed three. 10. The order of combination shall consist of the towing vehicle and, in order by weight, with the lighter of the towed vehicles as the third vehicle in the 3-vehicle combination unless not structurally possible. 11. The towing vehicle may be any registered motor vehicle. 12. One vehicle in the combination must be a mobile home or a camping trailer. Mobile homes, with walls of rigid uncollapsible construction, must be registered and must be equipped with brakes. Camping trailers, with a collapsible or folding structure and gross vehicle weight of 3,000 pounds or more, must be registered and have brakes. Camping trailers with a gross vehicle weight of less than 3,000 pounds are not required to have brakes or be registered. 13. The other vehicle in the combination must be a trailer, either empty or carrying a boat, ATV, personal watercraft, motorcycle, or other vehicles for personal, recreational use. This vehicle must be registered as a trailer and must have brakes if it has a gross vehicle weight of 3,000 pounds or more. 14. Trailers transporting horses cannot be included in the 3-vehicle combination. Dimensions 15. No vehicle in the 3-vehicle combination may exceed legal size and weight. 16. Single vehicles may not exceed 40 feet in length, 13 feet 6 inches in height and 8 feet 6 inches in width, except that a. Buses and mobile homes may not exceed 45 feet in length, 13 feet 6 inches in height and 8 feet 6 inches in width. b. Motor homes: May not exceed 45 feet in length, 13 feet 6 inches in height, and 8 feet 6 inches in width at the box level; Nor exceed 6 inches of appurtenances on the driver's side of the vehicle; Nor exceed 4 inches of appurtenances on the passenger's side of the vehicle. The appurtenances that create the additional width cannot appear on the vehicle fewer than 8 feet 0 inches from the ground and must be installed by the manufacturer or a dealer.

A renewal notice will be mailed to you approximately one month before the permit expiration date.
