INSTRUCTIONS:
The following instructions will guide you through the process of installing your digital certificate. Subscribers will be required to have a valid certificate before they can use the COURTS online website. These instructions are designed for use with Mozilla Firefox V. 2.0 higher.

Internet Browser Requirements:
To find out what version your Internet browser is, Open your browser Go to HELP and click ABOUT FIREFOX If using Mozilla Firefox, we strongly recommend that you upgrade your Browser to version 2.0 or higher. The upgrade is available for free at the following website: Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/

(don't forget the "s" in https) Located under the Download option, please read the Certificate Policy and the Certificate Practices Statement before applying for, accepting, or using a Digital Certificate. Use of the certificate will constitute acceptance of this policy. ** Select ENROLL. The Enrollment Form will appear. Complete all the fields including the Shared Secret and the Challenge Phrase. The Shared Secret has been printed in the letter sent to you from the Division. You must key in the information exactly as it appears in this letter. Click on the link for Subscriber Agreement. Read agreement before proceeding. Use of the certificate will constitute acceptance of this policy. ** Verify that the information submitted is correct. If correct, select SUBMIT. Confirm your e-mail address. You will be directed to the Digital Certificate Services page with a Congratulations message. A digital certificate has now been created for you. You will now be able to download and import the certificate onto your hard drive. Step I - download the certificate. Click on the text "here" to download. You may get an "Unknown File Type" dialog box. Hit "Save File". The "Save As" box will appear. Select the directory where the certificate will be stored. Remember the directory name for future needs. Hit "Save". (The digital certificate is created as a file type PKCS12 File (*.p12)). You may get a "Download Manager" dialogue box. Hit "x" to close. Step II - Copy Certificate File Password You will be returned to the Digital Certificate Services page. Carefully copy the password provided (be careful not to include any spaces or punctuation).

Do not exit this page without copying the password. You will not be able to retrieve it again.
Step III - Import the certificate On your browser, click on "Tools", then "Options", "Advanced", "Encryption", "View Certificates". Click on "Your Certificates". Click on "Import" button (scroll down, if necessary, to bottom of page to see button). You may next get a screen that will ask you if you want to set up a Master password. This is not required. This password will protect you from unauthorized use of your Browser. Please note that if you lose the Master Browser password, we cannot assist you in retrieving it. Hit "OK" to continue. The "File Name to Restore" box will appear. Highlight the certificate you wish to import (the certificate name will be your first and last name followed by a #, for example: jane_doe_102). If you can't locate the certificate, make sure you are in the directory where you saved the certificate (from Step I). Click "open". A password entry dialogue box will appear asking you to provide your certificate file password (you copied this from Step II). You may be asked to input the password twice. Hit "OK". You should receive this message: "Successfully restored your security certificate(s) and private key(s)." Hit "OK".

Please complete and retain for your records. You will be asked to provide this data after one year so that your certificate can be renewed
The Shared Secret is the 12-digit number mailed to you from the Division. _________________________________ The Challenge Phrase is a password you create and use when you want to manage your Digital ID. The Challenge Phrase protects you from unauthorized management of your Digital ID. The Challenge Phrase can be one or more words, but it cannot include any punctuation. Do not forget this phrase. _________________________________ The Certificate File Password is a password generated for you that will allow you to import your certificate into your hard drive. _________________________________ Master Password ­ You may be prompted by Firefox to set a password which will protect your certificates from unauthorized use. Setting this is optional. If you forget your password, we cannot assist you with retrieving it. _________________________________

In order for you to use the decision template functionality of COURTS on-line, you need to have Adobe ReaderTM software installed (version 5.0 or higher). If using version 6.0, make sure it is version 6.0.1. This software is available for free at the Adobe website: www.adobe.com. If you already have Adobe Reader installed but you need to upgrade your Internet browser, you will be required to re-install Adobe Reader after you upgrade the browser.

There are two essential steps that subscribers must complete before participating in COURTS on-line: Installing the Digital Certificate Installing the Root Certificate Authority (Trust Root Certificate Authority)

Installing the Digital Certificate (Digital ID)
A Digital Certificate, sometimes called a digital ID, is a file on your computer that identifies who you are. Some software applications use this file to verify your identity. Go to the State of New Jersey BLUE, Digital Certificate Center website

You will be returned to the Certificate Manager.

You can exit the Security page by clicking the "Close" button, "X".

Installing the Root Certificate Authority (Root CA)
A Root Certificate Authority has to exist in your browser to send signed and encrypted email. This is also required to manage and verify your certificate. Step IV: If you are no longer in the Security Info page, go to "Tools", then "Options", "Advanced", "Encryption", "View Certificates". Click on "Authorities". Locate and Highlight "New Jersey State Government Root CA's Root ID". Hit Edit button. next to "This certificate can Put a check identify mail users" and then hit "OK". The process is now complete. Exit the Certificate Manager by clicking the "x" button located at the top right of box. Hit "OK" to close the preferences box.

Congratulations - now you're ready to log on to COURTS on-line!
After you have successfully installed your digital certificate and your root certificate authority, you will be ready to log onto COURTS on-line. Type in the following URL:

Highlight your certificate in the list and then hit Continue. Our server will verify your identity from the digital certificate residing on your hard drive. You will next be prompted by a Certificate of Confidentiality. In order to proceed further, you will have to click on "I Agree". You are now officially in COURTS on-line. The program is intuitive and easy to use. We encourage you to explore the site to learn more about its capabilities. To verify if your Digital Certificate and/or your Certificate Authorities have been properly installed
On your browser, click on "Tools", then "Options", "Advanced", "Encryption", "View Certificates", "Your Certificates". Your certificates will appear in the window. You can open the certificate by highlighting it and then clicking on "View". To view the certificate authorities, select "View Certificates" and then "Authorities". This will list all the certificate authorities you accept.
