Taking Deposition, the videotaped deposition of MIKE
ROBINSON was taken on behalf of the Plaintiff, before
Sarah J. Long, Shorthand Reporter, State of Oregon, on
Thursday, September 22, 2005, beginning at the hour of
8:58 a.m., at the law offices of Foster Denman, LLP, 3521
East Barnett Road, in the City of Medford, County of
Jackson, State of Oregon.

1 Q Okay. Now, have you heard of the phrase
2 divergence?
3 A Yes.
4 Q And what's your understanding of divergence?
5 A Divergence is how fast the output beam grows, if
6 you will, expands as it moves forward, as it increases in
7 distance from the exit aperture of the module.
8 Q And what‘s your understanding of a typical
9 divergence, or what was your understanding of typical
10 divergence of laser diodes, say in 1992?
11 Ai Well, laser diodes are highly divergent. Again,
12 based on the drawing I did, that's why they incorporate a
13 lens with them, to focus them down. So the focusing lens
fi 14 takes this widely divergent image and creates a nice,
15 tight, usable spot, much less divergent.
16 Q An unfocused beam from a laser diode, is that
17 ever usable?
18 A Yeah, certainly. I mean, there‘s always I
19 applications that use nnfocused beams.
20 Q Okay. what forms of ~~ or what things can be
21 used to deal with divergence?
22 A To affect divergence -—
23 Q Okay.
24 A —~ you can use lenses. Various lenses will
25 affect divergence in varying ways. You can use apertures,
