Manitoba school tax assistance
You may qualify for some school tax assistance if you were 55 or older at the end of the year and your family income was less than $23,800. If you were a homeowner, see the details on page 10 in this book. If you qualify, calculate your claim on Form MB479, Manitoba Credits. If you were a tenant, you have to apply to Family Services and Housing at the Provincial Services Office. In Winnipeg, call 945-2197, or if you are from outside Winnipeg, call toll free at 1-877-587-6224. If you use a teletypewriter (TTY), the number is 204-948-3698. You can also contact them by email at [email protected]. Go to the Manitoba Web page at www.gov.mb.ca/fs/housing/stat55 for more information. You do not qualify for school tax assistance if you are a tenant living in government-subsidized or non-profit housing.

T

he income levels and some of the non-refundable tax credits used to calculate your Manitoba income tax have changed. The rate used to calculate provincial income tax has changed for taxable income of $31,000 or less. The rate used to calculate the dividend tax credit on other than eligible dividends has changed. The rate used to calculate the mineral exploration tax credit has changed. There is a new Primary Caregiver refundable tax credit for Manitoba residents who provide ongoing voluntary care to their spouse or common-law partner, relatives, neighbours, or friends who have been assessed under the guidelines of the Manitoba Home Care Program, as requiring care at level 2 or higher. The green energy equipment tax credit has been expanded to include equipment that produces solar energy. Form MB428, Manitoba Tax, Form MB479, Manitoba Credits, and Form T1241, Manitoba Mineral Exploration Tax Credit, reflect these changes.
